Three stages of transformation

01Up to 200°C

Pre-pyrolysis

Water and light gases evaporate. Some bonds break and new chemical groups form.

02200–500 °C

Main pyrolysis

Plant materials such as hemicellulose and cellulose break down rapidly.

03Above 500°C

Stable carbon

More resistant materials, including lignin, break down to create stable carbon.

Higher temperatures change biochar’s properties: greater surface area, higher pH and more carbon, but fewer functional groups and a lower capacity to retain nutrients. These differences influence its applications in soil.
